Danish-Swedish summer school on TDA and spatial statistics
Aalborg University, Denmark
The Danish-Swedish summer school on TDA and spatial statistics is a five-day event with the aim of educating data scientists to work at the interface of Topological Data Analysis (TDA) and Spatial Statistics. The principal target group are PhD students and postdocs in data science and related subjects; practitioners from industry are also highly welcome. Although dealing with similar problems, until recently there has been little interaction between TDA and spatial statistics. The summer school will thus be a major stepping stone for networking and knowledge sharing between these branches of data science.
Given that the size and complexity of datasets are still increasing rapidly, one of the key challenges in the near future will be to combine the strengths of spatial statistics and topological data analysis. In other words, we are in urgent need of techniques that are powerful enough to detect and describe subtle shapes in large datasets while still being supported by rigorous statistics so that they can be applied in highly sensitive application areas such as biomedicine. In order to attain this goal, the summer school will bring together the communities of topological data analysis and spatial statistics. It will help to educate a new generation of experts that are comfortable in navigating in both worlds so that they can achieve the desired synthesis.
